Score:Â Hollins 32, Randolph-Macon 49
Records: Hollins 6-2 / 1-1 ODAC | Yellow Jackets 6-2 / 2-0 ODAC
The Lead:Â For the first time this winter, the Hollins basketball team hosted an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opponent when Randolph-Macon came to the main gym. The Yellow Jackets raced out to an early double-digit edge as Hollins started very slowly after going overtime in their last outing. The Green and Gold found their footing and after surrendering 22 points in the opening frame, held Randolph-Macon to just 27 points over the final 30 minutes of play. Unfortunately, HU never got into a rhythm on the offensive end and fell to the Jackets, 49-32.
HighlightsÂ
- RMC scored the game's first eight points and kept Hollins scoreless until a Zaria Holden three-pointer deep into the opening frame. Hollins kept it close but when the visitors ended the quarter on a 3-0 run, the Yellow Jackets enjoyed a 22-9 advantage.
- The second quarter opened with a pair of Jacorra Russell free throws and a three-ball by Missy Hazard and HU was right back in the game. Macon responded with a 6-0 run to regain control and they would lead 32-16 at the half.
- Hollins continued to play stellar defense, holding Randolph-Macon to just eight third period points. However, HU would see just three free throws go through the net and trailed heading into the final quarter.
- Hollins won the fourth period, 13-9, thanks to a 10-2 run to close the game. At the final horn, Hollins had fallen to 1-1 in conference play, 49-32.
- Holden was the only player for either team in double figures with 11 points and seven boards. Noelani Carter finished with six points and four rebounds while Russell ended the game with six points and a game high eight rebounds. Russell added three steals and a pair of blocked shots.
Up Next:Â Hollins will host Virginia University of Lynchburg in a game next Wednesday night at 7:00pm. The game with the Dragons is the final before the exam period and start of the winter holiday break.
