Hollins Holds On for Season Opening Win

The Lead: For the second consecutive season, Hollins will open on the road in Decatur (Ga.) against the Brenau Tigers (NAIA). The Green and Gold would lead by as many as nine in the first quarter and settled for a 23-16 advantage. The Tigers would keep it close and trim the Hollins edge to six, heading into the halftime break. Hollins was able to maintain the advantage for most of the second half and led by four with just seconds to play. Brenau with a 3-poniter in the closing seconds and despite missing a pair of free throws, Hollins was able to see the time expire and for the second year in a year, defeating the Tigers, 66-65.

Highlights 
  • Jacorra Russell started the season with a three-point play leading Hollins to an early advantage. The lead grew to as many as nine before a pair of Tiger free throws made it 23-16.
  • Back-to-back buckets by Zaria Holden would see HU hold its largest lead of the night, 13 points. The Tigers would rally, using a 9-2 finish to the first half to make it 33-27 at the break.
  • The first two-minutes of the second half would see the Tigers make it a one-point game before Holden scored to stop the Brenau surge. With the score tied at 43-43, Missy Hazard connected from long range to put Hollins back in front.
  • The Tigers made another run, this time hitting a pair from long range to lead, 58-52. Russell, Holden, and Hazard combined to lead HU back and a pair of Noelani Carter Free Throws but Hollins up 66-62 with just seconds to play.
  • The Tigers hit a three in the waning seconds and fouled to put Hollins on the line with just 1.2 left to play. HU missed both free throws but as Brenau rebounded the ball and tried to call a timeout, the time expired and Hollins geld on for the one-point season opening win.
  • Holden finished with a career high 28 points to go with five rebounds, five assists, and a steal. Russel added 10 points and three steals while Carter scored six. Hazard and Sarah Morales each scored five points while Erin Allen and Gracie Huffard matched Holden with five rebounds.
Up Next: Hollins will look to start the season 2-0 when they take on Agnes Scott at 2:00pm on Saturday afternoon.
