The Lead: After picking up a home win on Wednesday, Hollins was back on the road looking for back-to-back wins when they visited Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon. The Green and Gold would take the first two quarters by a single point leading to a 36-34 halftime lead. A big third quarter would be the difference as Hollins pulled away for a double-digit Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win, 69-58.
Highlights
- Sarah Morales scored the first basket of the game but the Marlins would respond with an 8-2 run to take an early lead. Noelani Carter hit a pair of free throws and Morales scored her sixth point of the opening frame to tie the score at 8-8. HU built the lead to four before a late rally made it 14-13 after one period.
- The second quarter would see five ties and 12 lead changes but after 10:00 of play, Hollins would take a 36-34 lead into the break after a Morales jumper with just seconds left on the clock.
- With the score tied at 37-37, Cabria Mutz scored in the paint to help spark a 15-2 run that concluded with a Missy Hazard three-pointer and Hollins enjoying their largest lead of the afternoon, 52-39. The visitors maintained that 13-point edge heading into the fourth quarter.
- With just over five minutes to go, Zaria Holden hit a three-pointer to make it 68-51 and seeing Hollins hold their largest lead of the game. VWU would rally late but could get not closer than 11, the final margin in Hollins fourth ODAC win of the season.
- Three days after posting a career high 22, Morales eclipsed that mark when the sophomore led all scorers with 27 points to go with five rebounds. Carter added 14 points, four rebounds, and three steals. Hazard made it three in double figures with 11 while Mutz led the team with 11 boards and four steals.
Up Next: Hollins looks to win their third ODAC game in a row when they make the trip to Ferrum for a Wednesday night matchup with the Panthers. Opening tip-off is scheduled for 7:00pm.
