The Lead: Hollins returned to defend her home court on the back of dropping three consecutive Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) games. The Green and Gold wasted little time in welcoming Eastern Mennonite to campus by racing out to an 8-2 edge. The Royals would close the gap, but at the half, Hollins still clung to a one-point lead, 31-30. HU came out of the locker room and used an 8-0 run to take control of the matchup on their way to a 61-54 ODAC win over EMU.
Highlights
- Sarah Morales started the game with a three-pointer followed by buckets by Cabria Mutz and Noelani Carter to get HU out to an 8-2 lead. The visitors got to within a point, but it was a 3-pointer by Grayson Alfano that allowed the home to lead after the opening frame.
- Back-to-back 3-pointers by Moriah Hill gave Hollins another quick start. However, the Royals scored the next 11 to grab a five-point advantage. An offensive rebound and stick back by Mutz stopped the run and sparked Hollins to a 7-2 run to tie the game 28-28. Ariana Gutierrez scored from long range and with an EMU score at the buzzer, Hollins led 31-30 at the half.
- An Erin Allen jumper and another Morales score would force a quick timeout from the Eastern Mennonite bench. Morales and Carter added to the lead out of the timeout and Hollins would push the lead to 10 and allow HU to take a nine-point spread into the final quarter of play.
- Free throws by Alfano gave Hollins their biggest lead of the night, 53-42. EMU cut the advantage to five but couldn't rally as Hollins put the game away late to pick up the conference win, 61-54.
- Morales scored a career high 22 points to go with eight rebounds, four assists and seven steals. Mutz added a double-double with 10 points and 15 rebounds while adding three more blocked shots to bring her ODAC leading total of 48. Allen added six points and eight rebounds with Carter scoring three points with eight boards and a game high six assists.
