The Lead:  Wednesday marked the second to last regular season basketball game for a Hollins team that made the short trip to Salem to face Roanoke College. The Green and Gold would need an upset of the Maroons to take a late season win streak to Eastern Mennonite on Saturday, with the winner getting the 10th and final spot in the 2024 ODAC Women's Basketball Tournament. However, the home team used a 25-12 second frame to seize control of the matchup. Hollins would win the battle of the second half, 41-38, but fell to the Maroons, 77-61.
Highlights
  • The teams traded baskets early and when Noelani Carter converted a layup it was 8-6 midway through the opening quarter. Zaria Holden scored before the Maroons closed the period with a 3-0 run to lead by six.
  • Roanoke College exploded during the second quarter. Trailing by seven, Hollins would see their hosts score 20 of the next 25 points to take a commanding lead. Sarah Morales gave HU a little momentum as she buried a near half-court three-pointer at the buzzer to make it 39-20.
  • The Maroons grew their edge to 27 points before Cabria Mutz scored to end the third period.
  • The RC lead reached 30 before Hollins started to chip away. Missy Hazard scored seven of the Green and Gold's next 11 points to cut into the deficit. HU closed the game on a 12-1 run started by a pair of Mutz free throws. Carter scored five and when Holden connected from long range the final score would see Roanoke in front 77-61.
  • Morales paced a trio in double figures with 14 while Carter added 13 and Mutz finished with 12. Morales and Mutz each grabbed six rebounds with Erin Allen recording three assists and three blocked shots.
