Hollins Rallies Late for ODAC Road Win

The Lead: After tasting defeat for the first time in their last game, Hollins made the trip to Danville to take on Averett in their final Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) game of 2024. The first half would go back and forth. Averett was up by as many as seven but it would be the Green and Gold in front, 24-23, at the break. The second half you go back and forth until deep into the fourth quarter. Hollins went on an 8-2 run to take the lead into the final minute and pulled away for the 66-61 win.

Highlights 
  • Cabria Mutz scored the first three points of the game only to see the Cougars 10 straight points to seize early control of the matchup. Ariana Gutierrez hit a three-pointer to cut the deficit to 10-12, but the home team would score once more to take a 14-10 lead into the second frame.
  • The Cougar lead grew to six but another three by Gutierrez and a three-point play by Sarah Morales but Hollins back in front, 18-16. Coming out of the media timeout, Averett tied it but Missy Hazard quickly answered with a three-pointer. As the buzzer sounded, Hollins had come back to take a one-point lead into the half, 24-23.
  • Averett led for the first five minutes before Grayson Alfano hit a pair of long-range shots to tie the score at 30-30. Each team would enjoy an advantage but an Erin Allen layup made it 42-42 with 10-minutes left to play.
  • HU found themselves down five with 3:00 left to play. Buckets by Mutz, Noelani Carter, and Morales would put the Green and Gold up 60-59. Zaria Holden scored to give Hollins the lead and she hit a pair of free throws in the closing seconds to seal the ODAC victory.
  • Mutz posted a double-double with 13 points, 12 rebounds, and four blocked shots. Gutierrez and Alfano combined to go 5-14 from long range on their way to 25 bench points for HU. Holden finished with 10 points and nine boards while Morales added seven points, seven rebounds, and a team high three assists.
Up Next: Hollins will play one last home game before the holiday break on Tuesday when they host Regent at 6:00pm.
