The Lead:Â After starting 4-0 against non-conference competition, the Hollins basketball team started Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play with a visit from cross-town rival Roanoke College. HU jumped out to an early advantage, 5-2, before the Maroons closed the first period on an 8-4 run. A 9-0 surge late in the half would see the Green and Gold up by six at the break, 28-22. The second half belonged to the home team as Hollins enjoyed an 18-point lead on three different occasions on their way to a 57-46, ODAC, win.
HighlightsÂ
- Sarah Morales and Noelani Carter combined for five points to put Hollins in front. Carter made it 9-5 before Roanoke closed with five straight for a one-point edge.
- The score was tied at 15-15 when Cabria Mutz hit a jumper to spark an HU run. Three minutes later, a Morales free throw would cap a 9-0 Hollins surge that put the home team in front to stay.
- Late in the third, a Missy Hazard three-pointer saw the Hollins lead grow to 18.
- Hollins pushed the advantage to 18 twice in the fourth quarter, one on a Hazard three and the other after a made Carter free throw. The Maroons scored the game's final six points, but it wasn't enough as Hollins made it five in a row with a 57-46 win.
- Hazard went five of nine from long range on her way to a game high 17 points. The Stuart (Va.) native added three rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals. Carter scored 16 points while grabbing eight boards to go with two assists and four steals.
- Zaria Holden controlled the flow of the game with 11 points and six assists. The reigning ODAC Defensive Player of the Week, Mutz pulled down 18 rebounds to add to her six points, two helpers, three steals and four blocked shots.
