The Lead: Hollins looked to rebound from a slow day one of the Cougar Classic with a pair of matches in Danville on Saturday. Hollin took on Piedmont with both teams looking for their first win of the weekend. The Lions jumped on HU early and went on to sweep Hollins. In their tournament finale, the Green and Gold faced the host Cougars in a non-conference matchup. A weary Hollins squad would be no match for the heavily favored hosts, falling in three sets.
Highlights:Â
- HU fell to Piedmont: 17-25, 9-25, 13-25.
- Hollins trailed 8-9 but a run, 13-3, would give the Lions the first set and they carried that momentum to cruise to a 2-0 lead. A 10-3 run to start the third would keep Hollins playing from behind throughout.
- Piedmont would enjoy a 35-14 edge in kills and 19 HU errors would make it hard on Hollins.
- Carrie Nelson had five kills while Jaelyn Werley assisted on nine points. Werley had six digs with Faith Schaefer recording one solo and two assisted blocks.
- Averett defeated Hollins by the scores of 9-25, 6-25, 13-25.
- The Cougars used 33 kills and 10 service aces to control play from the opening serve.
- Sophia Maurer led with three kills and a solo block. Cassidy Henderson had one kill with a service ace and Werley led in assists (6) and digs (7).
Up Next:Â Hollins travels to Mary Baldwin on Tuesday night for a solo match in advance of the 2023 Maroon Classic, hosted by Roanoke College, next Friday and Saturday.
