The Lead:Â Tuesday marked the true road opener for the Hollins volleyball team when they made the trip to face Mary Baldwin. After four matches at the Cougar Classic over the weekend, HU went searching for a road win over the Fighting Squirrels. After falling in the opener, the Green and Gold rallied to win set number two. The rivals split the next two sets to go to a fifth and final frame. The Squirrels carried the momentum into the decisive set and completed their comeback to take the match, 3-2.
HighlightsÂ
- HU fell to Mary Baldwin by the score of 17-25, 25-17, 25-13, 22-25, 8-15.Â
- The home team took advantage of 12 Hollins miscues to pull away and take the opening set. Hollins would even the match at 1-1 when Sophia Maurer and Carrie Nelson recorded back-to-back kills to end the frame.
- Hollins raced out to a 7-0 advantage in the third set on their way to taking a 2-1 lead. The start of the fourth would see the Squirrels use a 7-2 run to take a 12-7 edge. HU pulled to within two at 23-21 but Mary Baldwin held on to force a fifth set.
- After falling behind, Hollins tied the score at 5-5 but MBU responded with three straight points ahead of the crossover. Kills by Faith Schaefer and Maurer kept Hollins in it but still trailed 12-7 forcing a timeout. Maurer got another kill out of the break, but it wasn't enough as the home team rallied to take the match 3-2.
- Â Selena Wolfe led with 13 kills while Maurer added 10 and Nelson finished with nine. Setter Jaelyn Werley registered a season high 38 assists with Zo Miranda leading the team with 15 digs. Maurer had four service aces and Werley recorded a pair of blocks.
- Hollins led 45-39 in kills, but 23 service errors proved too much to overcome.
Up Next:Â A short trip to Salem is on the schedule when Hollins competes in the 2023 Maroon Classic over the weekend. The first of four matches in the Cregger Center will start with a non-conference tilt against Randolph College on Friday afternoon.Â
