The Basics

The Lead: For the first time this season, the Hollins volleyball team defended her home court when they hosted Shenandoah in both teams Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opener. The Hornets would lead 17-16 before serving out the set with eight straight points. The second set was equally as close with SU taking four of the final six points to take a 2-0 lead. Shenandoah would close out the match in straight sets to take the ODAC win.
Highlights 
  • HU fell to Shenandoah 16-25, 22-25, 18-25. 
  • A Cassidy Henderson kill tied the first set at 16-16. After a Hollins service error, the Hornets closed out the fame with eight consecutive points on the serve of Natalie Reader.
  • In the second, a service ace by Jaelyn Werley got Hollins to within one, but three consecutive Hornet kills allowed the visitors to take a 2-0 lead into the third set.
  • In the third, Shenandoah used 14 kills and six Hollins attack errors to pull away and seal the ODAC victory. Hollins held their own at the net, 40-35 kills, but weren't able to get the points they needed in their first home loss of the season.
  • Carrie Nelson had 10 kills while Faith Schaefer added nine and Sophia Maurer finished with seven. Werley recorded 28 assists and 10 digs with Zo Miranda leading the back line with 15 digs. Werley added four service aces as Schaefer and Henderson combined for Hollins lone block.
Up Next: Next week Hollins begins a brutal road swing with a stop at Washington and Lee on Tuesday before heading east on 64 to face Randolph-Macon and Virgina Wesleyan over the weekend.
