The Lead: The 2023-24 volleyball season got under way on Friday with a trip to Danville to compete in the 2023 Cougar Classic, hosted by Averett University. Hollins fell in three sets to Waynesburg in their opener and in the second match, HU was unable to garner any momentum and fell to Bob Jones in straight sets.
Highlights 
  • HU lost to Waynesburg by the game scores of 16-25, 20-25, 25-22, and 13-25.
  • Hollins started the season by winning the first four and five of the first six points. However, the Yellow Jackets answered by taking their first lead on the heels of a 7-2 run. The Green and Gold would take the third set to make it 1-2 but fell in the fourth set.
  • The two teams would play even at the net with each recording 37 kills. Waynesburg committed just 21 errors on the attack giving them a 12-point advantage for the match.
  • Carrie Nelson paced HU with 12 kills while Sophia Maurer added 10 with a trio registering four apiece. Jaelyn Werley handed out 26 assists and Zo Miranda led a quartet of players with double-digit digs with a team high of 15.
  • Hollins fell to the Bruins: 8-25, 17-25, 21-25.
  • Bob Jones used a 34-22 advantage at the net to seize control early and not let Hollins get anything going.
  • Nelson and Maurer each added six kills with Maurer recording a team-high nine digs. Werley had 15 assists and a pair of service aces.
Up Next: Hollins is back in action tomorrow for the final day of the tournament with scheduled matches against Piedmont and the host Cougars.
