The Lead: Hollins played host to Averett on Saturday afternoon, less than 24 hours after picking up a non-conference win over Trinity. The Cougars jumped out to a lead but HU quickly answered and closed the first quarter with a 9-0 run. The Green and Gold would hold the lead, taking a 33-26 edge into the half. The Cougars used an 11-1 run to start the second half for their first lead of the afternoon. The home team responded to close the period with a 9-2 surge and lead by four. With less than four minutes to play, Averett led by five, but back-to-back three-pointers put Hollins in front to stay as HU picked up the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win, 58-55.

Highlights:
  • Trailing 6-2, Moriah Hill scored and followed it with a 3-ball to put Hollins in front. With the score tied at 10-10, a Noelani Carter free throw and Cabria Mutz layup sparked a 9-0 close to the opening period.
  • Carter pushed the advantage to double digits before a Cougar run would see the deficit cut to 23-21. Rebekah Funderburk scored to stop the run and after Ariana Gutierrez hit a three-pointer, the HU lead was back to eight.
  • The end of the second and beginning of the third saw Averett use a 10-1 run to tie the score at 34-34. Hill scored three and Selena Wolfe hit a pair of free throws to close out the frame and stake HU to a 43-39 lead heading into the finale.
  •  With 3:45 left to play, the visitors had rallied a held a 53-48 lead. Gutierrez hit back-to-back three pointers to see Hollins retake the lead, a lead they would not relinquish. HU closed out the win with free throws by Hill and Carter for the 58-55, conference, win.
  • After hitting six three pointers and scoring 24 points last night, Gutierrez hit four more from long range on her way to 16 points and 10 rebounds, the first double-double of her young career. Hill scored 14 while Mutz went for 13 points, 17 rebounds, and seven blocked shots. Carter scored five but handed out five assists and grabbed six boards.
  • Averett was led by Talia Prosper and Jihnez Hutchinson, each with eight points.
