The Lead: The Hollins basketball team traveled to our nation's capital to face a Trinity squad that they had defeated, 76-67, earlier in the month. The game with the Tigers was originally scheduled for December with the makeup taking place on Super Bowl Sunday. HU raced out to a 14-3 lead before a Trinity rally tied it at 17-17 after one quarter of play. The Green and Gold would seize control late in the second period and take an 11 point lead into the half. A 24-13 third frame allowed Hollins to put the game away as they completed the two-game sweep by a final of 82-59.
Highlights:
- Three pointers by Moriah Hill and Ariana Gutierrez would fuel a 14-3 start to the game. Trinity rallied to take a one-point lead before a Gutierrez free throw tied the score at 17-17 after 10 minutes of play.
- With three minutes remaining before the half, a T Shover layup followed by another Gutierrez 3-pointer and the Hollins lead was eight. Three straight Millie Shaw free throws and a Sarah Bell bucket would give HU a 43-32 lead at the break.
- The third quarter belonged to Hollins as Cabria Mutz scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds to allow the visitors to take a 69-47 advantage into the fourth quarter.
- Rebekah Funderburk gave Hollins a 25-point lead and then a Shaw three-ball gave Hollins their largest lead of the afternoon, 81-52. At the buzzer it would be an 82-59 total giving Hollins their second win of the season over the Tigers.
- Hollins dominated the glass, 62-28, leading to 29 second-chance points.
- Mutz finished with 26 points and a new Hollins single game record, 23 rebounds. Funderburk added 17 points and 16 rebounds while she and Mutz each recorded three blocks. Gutierrez scored 12 with Noelani Carter adding six points, nine rebounds, and four assists. Shaw scored a season high eight with Mackinzie Henninger handing out five assists.
- Taryn Yancey led the Tigers with 25 points, five boards, and five steals.
