Hollins Prevails in Double Overtime Thriller

The Lead: The Hollins basketball team was back in action after a break for the holidays with a trip to Salem to compete in the 2023 Susan Dunagan Holiday Classic, hosted by Roanoke College. The Green and Gold would open the event with a game against Lancaster Bible. The two teams didn't disappoint the sizeable crowd by playing a double-overtime thriller. In a game that featured 11 ties and 17 lead changes, Hollins would prevail with a 79-76 victory.

Highlights 
  • The game would start with a Missy Hazard three-pointer to put HU in front early. After the first lead change of the night, Sarah Morales hit a jumper from long range to make it 6-5. Both teams struggled from the field, but another 3-ball from Destiny Hoover would see Hollins down three after one quarter of play.
  • The Chargers would push their lead to seven, their largest of the game at the 9:00 mark. An Ariana Gutierrez three followed by a Morales bucket and Hollins was right back in the game. Trailing four, another Hazard bomb before an Erin Allen layup and Noelani Carter jump shot, HU would be back in front. Cabria Mutz gave HU a two-point edge in the closing seconds but a Lancaster Bible hoop at the buzzer would send the game into the half tied at 32-32.
  • A three by the Chargers would spark a run to make it 41-36 with just over five minutes remaining in the period but after a Hoover three-ball and Mutz layup the game would be tied once again. Morales hit a trio of free throws to stake Hollins to a 48-45 advantage with one quarter left to play.
  • Allen gave HU their largest lead of the game, 59-54, with less than six minutes to play. After another Charger rally, Carter nailed two free throws to give the Green and Gold a three-point edge late. However, Lancaster Bible cut it to one and were awarded a pair of free throws with .6 seconds left to play. After tying the game, a Morales game winner was off the mark and the game headed to overtime.
  • Hollins lead late int eh first extra period but a Charger jumper gave them a one-point lead. Zaria Holden made one of two from the stripe and the game would see a second overtime.
  • The final five minutes would see each team lead and with 1:00 remaining, Lancaster Bible was up 76-75. Morales scored out of a timeout to put HU in front for good. A pair of Carter free throws would seal the win, 79-76.
  • Morales (15 and 11) and Mutz (15 and 11) each recorded double-doubles. Allen added 10 with Holden scoring 11 points to go with eight boards. Hoover and Morales combined for eight of HU's 19 assists while Mutz blocked three shots and Carter picking up three steals.
Up Next: Hollins will wrap up play tomorrow with a 5:00pm tip against York (Pa.).
