The Lead:Â Saturday marked the second, and final day of the Empowerment Classic Tournament hosted by Hollins. The Green and Gold would look to make it a 2-0 weekend when they took the court against Trinity (DC). HU raced out to a 7-0 start and took a 10-point lead into the second quarter. That's when the Hollins defense took over, allowing the Tigers just 10 points over the next two periods on their way to a 79-28 win.
HighlightsÂ
- Missy Hazard hit a three-pointer to open the scoring and hit a layup after a Noelani Carter bucket to make it 7-0. Trinity cut it to three, but when Destiny Hoover hit a layup to close a 9-0 run, Hollins was up double-digits.
- Hollins allowed just a single point over the first nine plus minutes of the second frame on their way to a 40-13 lead at the half.
- The defense once again ruled the court, holding the Tigers scoreless for almost seven minutes. Another Hazard three pushed the lead to 30 and when Zaria Holden scored off an Erin Allen assist, the lead would be 54-14.
- A pair of Holden hoops followed by back-to-back buckets by Carter would close the scoring as HU ran their early season record to 3-2.
- Sarah Morales led all scorers with 15 while Holden added 13 with Hazard and Carter each scoring eight. 11 of the 12 Hollins players would score on the afternoon. Cabria Mutz filled the stat sheet with six points, 14 rebounds, four assists and four blocked shots.
Up Next:Â The Green and Gold will take a few days to enjoy the Thanksgiving break before returning to action next Sunday against defending Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Champion Washington and Lee.
