The Lead: Hollins played host to the Empowerment Classic Tip-Off tournament, featuring four all-women's colleges with play starting on Friday night. Hollins hosted Agnes Scott in the nightcap after Salem defeated Trinity in the tournament opener. The Green and Gold would lead by as many as 14 in the second half. A late Agnes Scott rally would close the gap but, in the end, HU picked up the non-conference win, 52-45.
Highlights
  • Leading 9-7, a Zaria Holden free throw would spark a 5-0 run to end the quarter. Cabria Mutz capped the run with a fast break layup to give Hollins a 14-7 advantage.
  • Sarah Morales hit a three-pointer followed by a jump shot by Rebekah Funderburk and HU was able to maintain their seven-point edge, 19-12. Morales gave the green and Gold their largest lead of the first half with a jumper, however neither team would score the final 5:00 of the opening half.
  • The drought would continue until Morales hit another long ball at the 7:29 mark to push the lead to double digits. Funderburk added to the lead and Hollins was poised to pull away.
  • The final quarter started with HU holding a 12-point cushion. Missy Hazard hit a three-pointer to push the lead to 17 with a little over six minutes remaining. The Scotties used a 9-0 run to close the game, but it wasn't enough as Hollins held on for the 52-45 victory.
  • Morales paced Hollins with 15 while Noelani Carter added 10 points and seven steals before fouling out. Mutz and Erin Allen combined for 15 of Hollins 44 rebounds with Hazard handing out four assists.
