The Lead: The Hollins basketball team opened the home portion of the schedule on Wednesday night when Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) rival Ferrum came to town. HU led by as many as seven in the first half, but a late Panther run would see Ferrum in front, 28-25, at the half. The Panthers pushed their advantage to six heading into the final 10-minutes of play. Trailing by eight, Hollins cut the lead to three in the closing seconds but down four, a three-pointer at the buzzer would see Ferrum leave with a 49-48 victory.
Highlights
  • Destiny Hoover and Cabria Mutz got Hollins out to a 6-3 lead. Mid-way through the opening quarter, Noelani Carter hit a jump shot to push the Hollins edge to five. Ferrum rallied to take the lead, but a Sarah Morales layup made it 15-14.
  • Another Mutz hoop followed by three-pointers by Morales and Missy Hazard would give Hollins their largest lead of the night. The Panthers answered and when they hit a three-pointer at the buzzer, it would Ferrum with a 28-25 advantage at the break.
  • Another Moralas three followed by a Carter bucket put HU back in front. A 9-1 Ferrum run to close the half would see the Green and Gold down six.
  • The Panthers led 47-41 with just under two minutes to play. Carter and Ariana Gutierrez scored to make it a one possession game. A free throw grew the lead to four, making a Hazard three at the buzzer a moot point as Hollins fell by one, 49-48.
  • Hazard hit four from long range to lead Hollins with 12 points. Morales added 11 before fouling out while Carter added eight. Mutz scored seven and grabbed a team high 11 rebounds and Morales added seven boards.
