The Lead:Â The two-game road trip to start the season would see Hollins at Mary Baldwin on Sunday afternoon. The game was close early before the Green and Gold closed the opening quarter with 7-3 surge to take control. After pulling away throughout the afternoon, a 26-point fourth would seal the first win of the season, 73-38.
HighlightsÂ
- With the game tied at 10-10, Noelani Carter got a hoop in the paint followed by a Moriah Hill three-pointer to take the lead. When Carter converted a steal into a layup, HU was up 17-13 after one quarter of play.
- Ariana Gutierrez hit a long ball to spark an 8-0 start to the second. Two more Gutierrez three-pointers and Hollins took a 32-19 advantage into the halftime break.
- A Carter free throw followed by a jumper and a 3-ball by Missy Hazard would see another Hollins surge and a 38-19 edge. The lead was over 20 when Carter scored another and after three quarters, Hollins was cruising, 47-28.
- The fourth quarter would see a Hollins explosion of 26 points. With 3:11 left to play, Sarah Morales made the lead 30 with a three-pointer. Zaria Holden hit HU's eighth long ball of the afternoon to close out the road win.
- Carter logged a double-double with 14 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists to go with five steals. Gutierrez (11) hit three more 3-pointers on her way to her second double figure game of the season. Morales scored 10 with Erin Allen adding eight and Holden finished with seven.
- Hollins held a 50-33 edge on the glass and used 14 steals to help lead to 25 points off turnovers. The HU bench was a big difference, outscoring the Squirrels 32-5.
