The Lead: Hollins stepped out of conference on Saturday with a trip to Maryland for a tri-match at St. Mary's. HU would take on Penn St.-Abington in their opener and fell 24-26 in the opening set. The Green and Gold responded by taking three in a row to claim the road win over the Nittany Lions. In the second match, the home team raced out to an early lead and took the opener. Hollins held a late lead but a rally by the Seahawks would take the set and carry to momentum into the third as St. Mary's would earn the 3-0 win.
Highlights
  • Hollins defeated PSU-Abington: 24-26, 25-14, 25-21, 25-15.
  • A Jaelyn Werley kill and Penn St. attack error, Hollins would lead 24-21. However, PSU rallied to win five consecutive points and take the opener.
  • Over the next three sets, Hollins enjoyed a 28-18 hitting edge to control the action on their way to taking the match. 20 service aces and five blocks would contribute to the 3-1 win.
  •  Faith Schaefer had 13 kills, five aces, seven digs and a pair of assisted blocks. Sophia Maurer added nine kills, five service aces and two solo blocks while Cassidy Henderson registered five kills, seven aces, and nine digs. Werley assisted on 29 of HU's 41 kills while contributing six kills and two aces. Zo Miranda led the team with 16 digs.
  • Hollins fell to St. Mary's: 18-25, 22-25, 14-25.
  • The Seahawks raced out to an early lead, building it to as many as nine, in taking the opening set.
  • Hollins looked to rebound in the second frame and Hollins took a 16-11 lead after a pair of Schaefer kills. A 4-0 run by the hosts would tie the set at 20-20. A Selena Wolfe kill, and bad Seahawk set put Hollins back in front, but a miscue followed by a kill and ace would see St. Mary's in front for the first time since a 1-0 start. The final points went to the home team and Hollins would be down 2-0. With the momentum of the comeback on their side, the Hawks controlled the third set on their way to the win.
  • Maurer led the offense with eight kills while Schaefer, Wolfe, and Makhaila Johnson each added four. Werley added 18 assists and two aces while Miranda matched her teammate with nine digs.
Up Next: HU returns to Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play on Wednesday with a mid-week trip to Ferrum for a 6:30 scheduled start.
