The Lead: For the first time in almost a month, the Hollins basketball team took the court in ODAC play when they made the short trip south to face Roanoke College. The Maroons came into the game atop the conference standings and seemed poised to take control early. However, the Green and Gold would lead early and trail by just two after one quarter of play. A big second frame gave the Maroons all the momentum as Roanoke College would use their deep bench to pull away and pick up the ODAC win, 80-54.
Highlights:
- Ariana Gutierrez scored four straight and Noelani Carter added a jump shot as Hollins would take a 6-5 advantage. After the Maroons answered, Carter and then Moriah Hill would score and the visitors were up (10-8) with four minutes to play in the opening frame.
- Roanoke would once again go in front but a Millie Shaw three-pointer gave Hollins her fifth lead of the first quarter.
- Trailing 13-15 to start the second period, Hollins would see the Maroons score the first seven points of the quarter. Hill hit a pair of free throws and a 3-ball to make it 24-18. Roanoke would close the half on an 18-7 surge to seize control.
- Another big quarter for the home team would see the Roanoke lead grow to 29 heading into the fourth quarter.
- Hollins finished the game on a 5-2 run, to take the fourth period (16-13) before falling to the Maroons 80-54.
- Carter finished with 16 points and three assists while Hill battled foul trouble to finish with 14 and three rebounds. Gutierrez grabbed a team high seven boards to go with her 11 points.
- Roanoke had 14 different players score on the night, led by Morgan Micallef with 14 and Rose Sande with 13.
