The Lead: Hollins made the trip to Danville to face Averrett with the winner moving up the ODAC standings. The Green and Gold would take a halftime lead and carry it into the fourth quarter. However, the Cougars rallied at home to comeback and pick up the 60-50 conference win.
Highlights:
- The home team raced out to a 5-0 lead before an Ariana Gutierrez three-pointer got Hollis on the board. Another Gutierrez 3-ball made it 6-5 and a third triple from the first-year saw Hollins in front 9-7 with 3:00 remaining in the opening frame. The Cougars would rally to take a 13-12 edge at the buzzer, with all 12 HU points coming from Gutierrez.
- The visitors would build a four-point lead after a pair of Moriah Hill free throws, 20-16. The Cougars re-took the lead but buckets by Rebekah Funderburk and Millie Shaw gave HU the lead at the break, 25-24.
- Gutierrez gave Hollins their largest lead of the afternoon, 32-26, before Averret rallied to tie the game at 42-42. With :19 left in the quarter, a Funderburk free throw gave Hollins a slim edge heading into the final 10-minutes of play.
- AU netted nine straight points to pull ahead at the mid-way point of the finale. Hollins would get back to within six after a Noelani Carter bucket but that was as close as they would get as the Cougars held on for the 50-60, ODAC, win.
- Gutierrez scored a game high 22 with the help of 6-9 from long range. Cabria Mutz just missed a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds while Funderburk added eight.
