The Lead: For the only time this season, the Hollins basketball team faced off with Guilford. The Quakers welcomed the Green and Gold to Greensboro on Wednesday night and it would be the visitors that would enjoy the lead at the half, 38-34. However, the Quakers exploded for a 21-7 third quarter on their way to picking up the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win, 72-57.
Highlights:
- A pair of free throws by Noelani Carter followed by a 3-pointer by Mackinzie Henninger would put Hollins out in front early. With the game tied at 9-9, Moriah Hill hit a three but it was quickly answered by Guilford, A Hill jumper and Carter layup would see HU in front, 19-14, after one quarter of play.
- Carter grew the lead to six before the Quakers answered with six straight to tie the score at 22-22. The home team took a five-point lead with 3:00 left in the first half. Ariana Gutierrez would tie the game with a three-pointer and after a Cabria Mutz layup in the final minute, HU took a 38-34 advantage into the locker room.
- A pair of Mutz free throws to start the second half would match Hollins largest lead of the night. After a Guilford 5-0 run, Hill got the lead back up to three with 5:21 left in the third. However, Guiflord took over from there closing the period on a 16-3 surge that gave the Quakers control and a double-digit edge.
- Sarah Bell scored inside to cut the deficit to eight, but Hollins could get no closer as Guilford pulled away late for the final of 72-57.
- Mutz posted her fifth double-double of the season with 13 points, 11 rebounds, and three more blocked shots. The sophomore now has 163 boards and 35 blocks on the season. Hill added 10 points before being disqualyfied on fouls. Henninger and Carter each added eight with Carter handing out four assists while Gurierrez scored seven and grabbed eight rebounds.
- Lindsay Gauldin led all scorers with 15 and J'ia Hinson added 14 points and six helpers for the Quakers.
