The Lead: The Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) preseason number one Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon made the trip to Hollins on Saturday afternoon. The first quarter was tight with Macon enjoying a slim advantage. Randolph-Macon went 5-8 from long range in the second frame to pull away for a 15-point, halftime lead. The second half was close but in the end, the Yellow Jackets prevailed, 64-40.
Highlights:
- The visitors scored first but the game was quickly tied on a Cabria Mutz layup. A pair of Rebekah Funderburk free throws cut the deficit to 7-5 with less than two minutes to play in the opening period. The Yellow Jackets closed the quarter with a jump shot and a 9-5 edge.
- The second quarter would see the Yellow Jackets get hot from behind the arc. After going 0-8 from three-point land in the opener, RMC hit their first five attempts and finished 5-8 on their way to winning the 10-minutes, 20-9.
- Randolph-Macon pushed their lead to 21 but back-to-back scores by Noelani Carter and Mutz helped stop the run. Ariana Gutierrez hit a pair of three-pointers and Moriah Hill scored the final three points of the period to keep Hollins in the game, 52-29.
- Consecutive hoops by Carter and another Mutz free throw would see Hollins get closer but RMC was able to pull away once again late for the ODAC win.
- Mutz just missed another double-double with 13 points to go with nine rebounds. The ODAC's second leading shot blocker added two more blocks to her season total. Gutierrez added 10 points with Hill finishing with seven points and a pair of steals. Carter scored six, grabbed five boards, and handed out a game high five assists.
- Jane Elkins came off the Randolph-Macon bench to lead all scorers with 14 while Juliana Park netted 11. Catherine Kagey posted eight points, 10 rebounds, and four assists in just 19 minutes of action.
