Panthers Hold Off Hollins in ODAC Play

Score: Hollins 45 | Ferrum 52
Records: Hollins 1-10 / 0-8 ODAC | Panthers 6-9 / 2-6 ODAC
Location: Roanoke, Va.

The Lead: Feruum College came to Hollins for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) matchup on Wednesday night. It marked the first HU appearance at home since early December and the Green and Gold did not disappoint their fans going back and forth with the Panthers for much of the night. Trailing by three at the half, Hollins would see Ferrum open up a double-digit spread. However, the fourth quarter would see Hollins rally to get back to within four points, but it wasn't enough as Ferrum would be able to turn back the HU surge and hold on for the 52-45, conference, win.

Highlights:
  • Hollins fell behind 7-0 to start the evening. With just over 5:00 left in the first period, Cabria Mutz scored at the rim and it was followed by a three-pointer by Ariana Gutierrez to put HU in front, 10-9. The lead would trade hands two more times before a Ferrum 4-0 run closed the quarter.
  • A pair of Mutz free throws and layup by Sarah Bell once again saw Hollins in front with 6:00 to go before the half. The Panthers pushed the lead to six but a Mackinzie Henninger three-point play at the buzzer would make it 29-26 at the break.
  • The HU turnovers started to mount and Ferrum turned the miscues into a double digit advantage. A three-pointer by Millie Shaw trimmed the deficit to nine going into the fourth quarter.
  • A Gutierrez triple and Rebekah Funderburk jumper made it 43-39 with 8:30 left on the clock. That was as close as Hollins would get as Ferrum held on for the ODAC win.
  • Mutz finished with nine points, 10 rebounds, three steals and six blocked shots. Gutierrez added nine points to go with four boards while Moriah Hill added eight points and Funderburk scored six with five rebounds. Noelani Carter handed out a team high six assists, grabbed four rebounds and picked up three steals.
  • Trina Lewis went 7-10 from the field and 2-2 from the FT line to net a game high 16 points.
