Location: Roanoke, Va.

The Lead: The 2022-23 basketball season got under way on Tuesday night when William Peace made the trip to Roanoke to take on Hollins. The Green and Gold would lead for a majority of the evening before a 6-0 run by the Pacers would send the game into overtime. In the extra frame, Hollins would run out of gas as the visitors took the season opener, 73-58.

Highlights:
  • Moriah Hill and Cabria Mutz got Hollins off to a 10-0 start and HU would lead 16-11 after one period of play.
  • With Hollins leading by nine, the Pacers would cut the lead to just a single point on the back of an 8-0 run. Rebekah Funderburk put a stop to the WPU surge, 24-21, but the visitors would score seven of the final eight points of the half to take a 28-25 edge into the locker room.
  • Trailing by five, 39-34, first-year Ariana Gutierrez hit a three-ball to start a run that would see Hollins retake the lead, 40-39, with 2:43 left in the third. Sarah Bell pushed the advantage back to three before a 5-0 Pacer close to the frame would see HU down two.
  • With just 3:29 left to play, another Gutierrez three-pointer gave Hollins a 55-49 lead. A Noelani Carter free throw kept the six-point edge into the final two minutes of regulation. However, WPU would hit a game tying three in the closing minute and after each team came up empty, the game headed to overtime, 56-56.
  • The extra frame belonged to the road team as Hollins would score just two points and watch a steady parade of players hed to the bench with fouls as William Peace took the season opener, 73-58.
  • Hill paced Hollins with 20 while Mutz added 10 points and 19 rebounds. Gutierrez hit three from long range for nine. Carter handed out five assists, three steals, and a blocked shot.
  • Pamela Mock led all scorers with 24 while Ninevah Reddick and Elisha Aull each added 15 points.
