Hollins Falls to Second Half Rally

The Basics
Score: Hollins 40 | Virginia Wesleyan 50
Records: Hollins 1-4 / 0-2 ODAC | Marlins 4-2 / 1-1 ODAC
Location: Virginia Beach, Va.

The Lead: The Green and Gold took to the road for a post-Thanksgiving matchup with Virginia Wesleyan. The two ODAC rivals went into the contest looking to win their first conference game of the season. Hollins controlled the first half and took a 30-20 lead into the break. However, the Marlins would dominate the second half, outscoring their guests 30-10 en route to a 10-point ODAC win, 50-40.

Highlights:
  • Hollins would shoot over 57% during an opening quarter that would stake them to a 19-13 edge. Ariana Gutierrez went three for three from long range to put the Green and Gold in front.
  • With 6:12 left before the half, a Millie Shaw 3-pointer would put Hollins up by nine, 24-15. Another Gutierrez three ball grew the lead to double digits and after a Rebekah Funderburk free throw, HU went into the break up 30-20.
  • Moriah Hill hit a jump shot to make it 32-22, but eight straight Marlin points closed the gap to just a single basket. Cabria Mutz stopped the VWU run, but only for a moment as the home team scored the final five points of the period and claimed a 35-34 lead after three quarters of play.
  • Virginia Wesleyan would hold a 37-36 edge with just over five minutes left to play. That's when the Marlins closed out Hollins by finishing the afternoon on a 13-4 run to claim the ODAC victory.
  • Gutierrez finished with 15 points and six rebounds. Noelani Carter added nine points, eight boards, and four assists while Funderburk scored five points after battling foul trouble throughout the game.
  • Adaje Williams and Jada Norman each scored 13 with Natalie Collier adding 12.
Up Next: Hollins travels to Lexington to face Washington and Lee on Wednesday night for a 5:00pm tip with the Generals.
