Hollins Hosts Defending Champs

The Basics

The Lead: After starting the season with a pair of non-conference games, Hollins welcomed Shenandoah to town for their ODAC opener. The defending champion Hornets raced out to a double digit lead in the opening frame. The second half belonged to the Hornets as Shenandoah wore down Hollins, allowing just 12, second half points, and the visitors would cruise to the 78-33 victory. 

Highlights:
  • Noelani Carter scored to stop a 7-0 SU run to open the game. Fellow first-year Ariana Gutierrez hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to make it an 18-9 game after 10-minutes of play.
  • Another Gutierrez three-pointer would open the second quarter and cut the deficit to six, however, by the midway point it would be the Hornets with a double digit advantage.
  • The second half would see the Green and Gold hit just four of their 27 shot attempts as Shenandoah would continue to pull away during the final 20 minutes of play.
  • Gutierrez finished with a game high 19 points after hitting four three-pointers on the evening. Rebekah Funderburk had six points, five rebounds, and four blocks while Carter finished with five. 
  • For the third straight contest, Cabria Mutz secured double-digit rebounds, finishing with 11. 
  • 11 different Hornets scored, led by Kimble Madison with 15 points and Shawnise Campbell added 13 points, nine rebounds, and four blocked shots. Emily Williams netted 10 to go with 11 rebounds.
Up Next: Hollins will have one more game before the Thanksgiving break when they travel to Roanoke College to take on Salisbury at the Jean Beamer Tip-Off Tournament. The tip with the Seagulls is scheduled for 2pm on Sunday afternoon at the Cregger Center.
