The Lead:Â A short-handed Hollins team earned a hard fought 54-49 ODAC Basketball win over Eastern Mennonite at home on Wednesday.
Highlights:
- Eastern Mennonite jumped out to a 10-2 lead midway through the first quarter. HU rallied, outscoring EMU 12-2 the rest of the way with a Tia Tucker three-point play giving Hollins a 14-12 lead after the first.
- The Royals held a slim 20-18 lead with under two minutes to play in the half. HU scored six of the final eight points on the strength four points from Kayla Surles and a jumper by Moriah Hill in the closing seconds that sent HU to the intermission up 24-20.
- A Tucker jumper with just over four minutes left in the third quarter made it a 32-26 game in favor of HU. EMU scored the next five points, trimming the lead to one following a Claiborne Poston basket.
- HU responded with an 8-0 run, extending its lead to 39-31 when Cabria Mutz knocked down a jumper with under a minute to go.
- EMU scored the final two points of the third quarter then opened up the fourth by tallying the first eight points to pull in front 41-39 with seven minutes to play in the game.
- Hollins scored the next six points with a Surles bucket pushing HU in front 45-41 with five and a half minutes to play.
- EMU scored six of the game's next eight points, tying the game at 47-47 when Brii Redfearn scored with 2:37 to play in the contest.
- On HU's next trip down the floor, Xavia Hahn got a rebound of a Surles miss and scored to put Hollins in front for good at 49-47.
- Hollins got two consecutive defensive stops then converted five-of-six free-throws in the final minute to seal the win.
- Tucker had a game-high 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the floor. She also had five rebounds and three steals in the win. Surles finished with 18 points and six rebounds. Hahn and Mutz each pulled down 11 rebounds which is a career-high for both.
- Redfearn finished with 14 points and 16 rebounds. Poston had 11 points and Trinity Price had 10 boards for the Royals.
