Hollins Falls at Ferrum on Wednesday

The Lead: In its first action since Dec. 8, the Hollins University Basketball team dropped a 59-48 decision to Ferrum on Wednesday night in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game.

Highlights:
  • Kayla Surles led Hollins in scoring with 14 points. Tia Tucker joined Surles in double-figures with 11 points, as did Cabria Mutz, who had a career-high 10 points in the loss. Moriah Hill added a career-high eight points for HU as well.
  • Xavia Hahn had a team-best six rebounds, while Surles and Tucker had five boards apiece. Tucker, Mutz and Hill all had three steals defensively.
  • Ferrum jumped out to a 10-3 lead before HU scored six straight points, with five coming from Hill, to make it a 10-9 game late in the first quarter.
  • Hollins led 12-11 in the opening minutes of the second quarter when the Panthers scored eight unanswered points to take a 19-12 lead with just over six minutes to play in the half.
  • After a pair of Surles free-throws cut the Ferrum lead 26-18 with 1:30 to play, a bucket by Cameron Hawkins would send the Panthers to the locker room leading 28-18 at halftime.
  • With Ferrum leading 30-20 just under two minutes into the third quarter, Tucker scored seven straight points to make it 30-27 with 5:23 to play.
  • The Panthers scored eight of the final 10 points of the third quarter to lead 38-29 and used an 8-2 run to start the fourth quarter to extend their advantage to 46-31 with 7:07 to play in the game.
  • FC had a 16 point lead with just under three minutes to play. HU fought back with an 8-0 run, capped by a Surles three-pointer making it 56-48 with 49 seconds to go. 
  • Kayla Cabiness had a game-high 17 points and Hawkins recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
