The Lead: Playing in front of its home fans for the first time in 625 days, the Hollins University Basketball earned its first win of the 2021-22 season on Monday, topping Virginia University – Lynchburg 74-65.
Highlights
- The Dragons knocked down 6-of-15 shots from the field and connected on 10 free-throws to hold a 24-16 lead after the first 10 minutes of play.
- VUL stretched out its lead to 13 halfway through the second quarter when a Teyana Carswell layup made the score 34-21.
- Hollins stormed back as a Kayla Surles basket on HU's ensuing possession sparked what proved to be a 14-0 run to close the half. A bucket by Unoma Aguolu in the final seconds sent the teams to the locker room with HU up 35-34.
- The Dragons scored to open up the second-half and take the lead back, just to see Aguolu drain a three-pointer the next trip down the court to give Hollins the lead back for good.
- A Jalaya Duarte three-pointer in the final minute of the third quarter sent HU to the final quarter with a 51-44 lead.
- Xavia Hahn knocked down a three-pointer to start the fourth quarter, igniting what proved to be a 17-4 run for HU as it went up by 20 points and put the game away.
- Aguolu led all scorers with 20 points. Duarte came off the bench to score 16 points behind five three-pointers. Hahn and Tia Tucker each finished with nine points, while Duarte and Darice Weldon each grabbed nine rebounds in the win. Surles finished with seven points, eight assists and five steals.
Up Next: Hollins will head to the Agnes Scott Tournament where it will take on the host Scotties on Friday at 8:00 p.m.
