Hollins Runs By Host Scotties on Opening Night of Agnes Scott Tip-Off Tournament

The Lead:  Behind 26 points from Unoma Aguolu, the Hollins Basketball team knocked off the host Scotties on the first night of the Agnes Scott Tip-Off Tournament in Decatur, Ga.

Highlights
  • Aguolu scored her 26 points on 10-of-13 shooting in addition to grabbing seven rebounds in just 28 minutes on the floor.
  • Aguolu was one of three Hollins players in double-figures in the win. Kayla Surles had 16 points and Tia Tucker chipped in with 10. Xavia Hahn added nine points off the bench for the Green and Gold which had nine different players score in the win.
  • HU held a 67-31 edge on the glass thanks to a game-high 12 rebounds from Rebekah Funderburk and nine boards from Jalaya Duarte. Hollins had 35 offensive rebounds that led to 27 second chance points.
  • Hollins trailed 7-6 four minutes into the game when it scored eight unanswered points with a Darice Weldon basket making the score 14-7 with just over three minutes to play in the first quarter.
  • The Green and Gold would lead 18-11 and eventually pushed its lead to 20-13 early in the second quarter before the Scotties cut it to a 24-22 game following a three-pointer by Ivey Portis with 4:37 to go in the half.
  • On Hollins next possession, Funderburk drained a jumper to start what would be a 12-0 run to close the half for HU. The run was capped by a Surles three-pointer in the closing seconds that sent the teams to the locker room with HU leading 36-22.
  • Hollins came out in the second half and opened up a 19-point lead early in the third quarter when back-to-back baskets by Hahn made it a 46-27 game.
  • HU led 57-43 after three quarters and it started off the fourth with a 10-2 run to put the game away as its lead would reach as many as 33 down the stretch.
Up Next: Hollins will close out the Agnes Scott Tournament on Saturday when it faces Sewanee at 1:00 p.m. Sewanee dropped an 82-77 overtime decision to Belhaven in the tournament opener.
