The Lead: The Hollins University Basketball team opened up its 2021-22 campaign on Saturday, dropping a 76-67 decision to host Pfeiffer.
Highlights
- Hollins was paced by Kayla Surles who had a game-high 17 points in the loss. Surles also added seven rebounds, four steals and a block. Unoma Aguolu joined Surles in double-figures with 14 points and she also grabbed seven boards.
- Jalaya Duarte chipped in with 11 points, while Cabria Mutz had a game-high 10 rebounds, helping HU to a 52-45 edge on the glass.
- Brina Bentley led the Falcons with 16 points and Kenadie Hudler had 15 points.
- Pfeiffer took advantage of 26 HU turnovers, while both teams struggled from the free-throw line. Hollins made 28-43 shots from the charity stripe and Pfeiffer knocked down 20-of-34 attempts.
- HU made 5-of-13 shots from the field in the first quarter with a Xavia Hahn bucket in the closing seconds giving Hollins a 13-12 lead after the first 10 minutes of play.
- A Duarte three-pointer just over two minutes into the second quarter gave HU a 19-16 lead before the Falcons would go on a 10-0 run, taking a 26-19 lead on Brittany Mills jumper with 4:37 left to play in the half.
- Hollins battled back, scoring the next eight points, moving ahead 27-26 on a basket by Mutz with 2:32 to go. Pfeiffer tied the game on its next possession and would hold a 36-31 lead at the intermission.
- The Falcons outscored HU 18-11 in the third quarter to take a 54-42 lead heading into the final 10 minutes of play.
- Back-to-back baskets by Aguolu to open up the fourth quarter cut the Hollins deficit to 54-47 with just over nine minutes to play.
- Pfeiffer scored 10 of the next 14 points to open up a 13 point lead at 64-51 with six minutes to go in the game and were able to hold Hollins off down the stretch to secure the win.
Up Next: Hollins will play its first home game of the season on Monday at 7:00 p.m. when it hosts UVA-Lynchburg.
