The Lead:Â Â Hollins University opened its ODAC slate of games on Wednesday by knocking off Guilford for the first time since 2004, as it topped the Quakers 55-48. HU has now won four games in a row.
Highlights
- Tia Tucker and Unoma Aguolu scored 16 and 14 points, respectively and each grabbed nine rebounds for Hollins. Aguolu also had six steals and three assists in the win. Kayla Surles had nine points for HU, while Jalaya Duarte had five points and grabbed eight boards for the Green & Gold.
- Lindsay Gauldin had a game-high 20 points in a losing effort for Guilford and Courtney McMillan had a game-high 14 rebounds for GC.
- Guilford led 14-12 after the first quarter of play as neither team was able to open up more than a four-point advantage during the first 10 minutes of play.
- HU scored the first seven points of the second quarter as it took a 19-14 advantage on a Xavia Hahn basket with just over six minutes to go in the half.
- Guilford would make it a 19-16 game on its next possession before HU closed the half on a 12-4 run, with a Darice Weldon bucket in the final minute sending the teams to the locker room with Hollins leading 31-20.
- Hollins pushed its lead to 17 points just over two minutes into the second half following a Tucker layup that made the score 40-23.
- The Quakers battled back as it put together a 14-3 run. A McMillan bucket with under a minute to go in the quarter made it a 47-43 game.
- On HU's ensuing possession, Cabria Mutz extended the HU lead to 49-43 with a basket to end the scoring in the quarter.
- With the score 49-44, HU got back-to-back baskets from Tucker and Aguolu to go up nine points (53-44)Â with under three minutes to go in the game.
- The Hollins defense came up big in the fourth quarter, holding Guilford to 2-of-15 shooting in the final 10 minutes, including 0-for-9 from behind the three-point line.
