Box Score Staunton, VA - The Hollins University tennis team stepped out of conference for a non-conference matchup on Wednesday afternoon. Mary Baldwin welcomed Hollins to Staunton for a match between the two, all women's, foes.
In need of a win to gain momentum for the second half of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) schedule. Hollins raced out to an sizable advantage by sweeping the doubles matches. In singles play, Hollins continued to dominate the match by winning five of the six individual matchups to take the win, 8-1.
The #1 doubles team of Gaelin McLeod and Amelia Verkerk made short work of the home team, 8-1, giving the visitors their largest win of the the opening matches. Verkerk and Wibecka Oliver each won in singles play by dropping just a single game. Jhovanna Salmeron won at #2 singles by besting her Mary Baldwin opponent two and two (6-2, 6-2). McLeod picked up the win at the #1 spot while Neha Batool picked up the eighth and final win of the afternoon for the road team.
Hollins returns home tomorrow afternoon for their annual, cross-town, match with Roanoke College. The Maroons bested Hollins twice last season, including a win in the quarterfinal round of the 2015 ODAC Women's Tennia Championships.
