The Lead: The Hollins volleyball team made the short trip to Salem to compete at the 2026 Maroon Classic, hosted by Roanoke College. HU faced Methodist in the tournament opener and returned to take on Salem College later Friday evening. Methodist broke open a close match in the first set and carried that momentum to a 2-0 lead. HU trailed in the third before a rally tied the score at 22-22. However, the Monarchs won the race to 25 for a 3-0 win over the Green and Gold. In the nightcap against the Spirits, Hollins was poised to take the opening set before a Salem 5-0 rally to close the set for a 1-0 lead. Salem took over from there, cruising to a second set win before closing out Hollins 3-0.
Highlights:Â
- Hollins fell to Methodist 19-25, 11-25, 23-25.
- The score was tied at 14-14 before Methodist used a 6-1 run to take control of the opening set. The Monarchs used that momentum to take the second frame 25-10.
- In the third set, HU found themselves down 17-22 before a 5-0 surge tied the score at 22-22. However, Methodist rallied to win three of the final four points for a 3-0 win.
- Cassidy Henderson led with six kills while Ivy Collins and Ava Willard added five kills apiece. Laken Tingler and Evelyn Harris each handed out 11 assists.
- Abby Neel and Peyton Bartholow combined for 10 digs. Henderson, Willard, Neel, and Norah Madrey each had one block.
- Salem defeated Hollins 23-25, 10-25, 17-25.
- A kill by Henderson and service ace by Tingler and Hollins took a 23-18 advantage only to see Salem rally with seven consecutive points for a first set win, 25-23.
- Salem used a 30-12 edge in kills over the next two sets to pick up the 3-0 win over a young Hollins squad.
- Annabelle Kemper and Neel each recorded five kills against the Spirits. Henderson and Tingler each served a pair of aces.
- Tingler had 10 and Henderson nine assists with Willard leading the back row with 10 digs. Hollins enjoyed a great defensive night at the net with Henderson and Madrey registering five blocks and Collins finished with four.
Up Next:Â Hollins is back in action tomorrow for Day two of the Maroon Classic. Hollins faces N.C, Wesleyan at noon followed by their finale against Greensboro at 3:00 pm.
