Three in a Row for Hollins Basketball

The Basics

The Lead: For the final time in 2025, the Hollins basketball took the floor when they hosted Mary Baldwin on New Year's Eve. The game was close early before the Green and Gold used a 11-0 surge to take control. Hollins used that momentum to take a 29-13 lead into the locker room. A 13-2 run to start the second half ended any sort of a Fighting Squirrel comeback as Hollins put up 62, second half, points to pick up their third consecutive non-conference win to close out 2025.

Highlights 
  • Mary Baldwin hit a three-pointer to open the game. Hollins responded with a pair of Zaria Holden free throws before the visitors made it a 5-2 start. Gracie Huffard started an 11-0 run that was capped by a Holden three ball to give Hollins all the momentum.
  • Leading 17-9 after the first quarter, Jacorra Russell scored in transition, and it was followed by a put back by Erin Allen and HU was off and running. The lead grew to as many as 17 and when Huffard scored in the closing seconds, Hollins led 29-13 at the break.
  • Missy Hazard drained a pair from long range to start the second half and push the lead to 20. A fast break hoop by Russell made it 30 and Hollins took a 52-16 advantage into the fourth quarter.
  • 18 straight points to the put the game out of reach as Hollins cruised to the win, 91-25. It marked the second night in a row that the HU defense help their opponents under 30 points. Offensively, Hollins scored 40 fast break points and turned 39 Fighting Squirrel turnovers into 46 points.
  • Holden had 19 points, five rebounds, seven assists, and three blocks. Russell added 18 points and six boards while Sarah Morales finished with 11 points, seven boards, and six steals. Huffard scored six points while grabbing a game high 11 rebounds, four assists, and four steals. First year Kennedy Leggett scored a career high 12 points, handing out five assists, and picking up four steals.
Up Next: Hollins gets back to Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play on Wednesday, January 7th, with a trip to Eastern Mennonite for a 7:30pm scheduled tip-off.
