The Lead: The final game of the 2025 Empowerment Classic would feature Hollins hosting William Peace. Both teams picked up wins on the opening night, and the winner would be crowned the unofficial "winner" of the two-day event. Hollins closed the first quarter on a 6-3 surge for a 16-13 advantage. HU grew the lead to as many as six only to see the Pacers close the half with an 8-0 run and Hollins would be down by two at the break. The Green and Gold came out of the locker room and promptly retook the lead. But once again, William Peace responded, this time a 10-0 surge gave the visitors a 40-35 edge heading into the final quarter of play. Hollins tied the game at 42-42, then pulled out to a double-digit lead and held on for a 64-56 win, taking their early season record to 5-1.
Highlights
- Sarah Morales scored the game's first points before the two teams traded the lead back and forth. Gracie Huffard tied the game at 10-10 and when Jacorra Russell put HU back in front, the home team closed the period on a 10-3 run to take a 16-13 edge.
- At the 3:41 mark, Abby Kingery gave Hollins their largest lead of the first half, 23-17. That would be the final Hollins points as they watched William Peace close the half with eight straight points and a two-point lead.
- Missy Hazard connected from long rage and then Morales scored to put Hollins up by three. A Morales free throw pushed the lead to five before the Pacers answered with 10 in a row for a 40-35 lead heading into the final 10-minutes of play.
- The deficit reached seven before Hollins started to mount a comeback. After a Kennedy Leggett 5-0 run, the game would be tied at 42-42 with 8:00 remaining. A Morales layup and Hazzard three-pointer but HU in front to stay. A pair of Zaria Holden free throws gave Hollins her largest lead of the game, 60-50, on their way to a 64-56 win and a 5-1 start to the 2025-26 campaign.
- Senior Noelani Carter scored 15 points to go with eight rebounds, an assist, and three steals. Morales added 15 points with six boards while Hazard scored 10 with four rebounds.
- Holden scored six with eight rebounds and Russell finished with six points & six rebounds while Huffard chipped in four points and six rebounds.
- For her efforts Carter was named MVP of the Empowerment Classic and was joined on the All-Tournament team by Morales.
