The Lead: Less than 24 hours after leaving the floor, the Hollins basketball team was back in action at the Jean Beamer Tip-Off Classic in Salem. HU faced off with Eastern on the second day of the event hosted by Roanoke College. Hollins jumped on the Eagles early and raced out to a 15-8 advantage. In the second frame, the Green and Gold continued to control the game as they pushed their lead to as many as 16 before taking a 33-18 lead into the break. The Eagles would win the third quarter before Hollins pulled away in the fourth for their third win of the season, 65-51.
Highlights
- Eastern scored the first four points before Erin Allen got Hollins on the board. A put back by Gracie Huffard and three by Zaria Holden put Hollins in front. Thanks to a 9-0 close to the quarter, HU was up by seven heading into the second stanza.
- Holden started the quarter capping an 11-0 run. Eastern cut the lead to five before Hollins embarked on a 6-1 run to push the lead back into double figures. Abby Kingery scored inside and Holden followed to give Hollins their largest lead of the first half, 31-15,
- After the Eagles cut into the lead, Missy Hazard hit from long range to make it 40-26 at the midway point of the quarter. Leading by just eight, Ariana Gutierrez connected from deep to allow Hollins to regain control.
- With 6:20 left to play, Sarah Morales made the lead 19, the largest of the game. Hollins shot 14-19 in the second half to take care of the Eagles, 65-15.
- Holden led all scorers with 21 points. Huffard recorded a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds to go with four blocked shots. In all, 10 different Hollins players scored on the afternoon. Noelani Carter grabbed 12 rebound helping HU enjoy a 48-39 edge on the glass.
- For the two games, Holden scored 36 points, six rebounds, seven assists, a block, and three steals helping the junior land a spot on the All-Tournament Team.
Up Next: Hollins will finally play on her home court next weekend when Hollins hosts the Empowerment Classic on Friday and Saturday. HU will open the two-day event with a game against Warren Wilson on Friday night at 7:00pm.
