Hollins Victorious in Regular Season Finale

The Lead: Saturday marked the final day of the 2022-23 basketball regular season. Hollins would not only be looking to avenge a 10-point loss to Virginia Wesleyan, but trying to win one final Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) game this season. Hollins raced out to a double digit lead on their guests and would lead 22-7 after the first quarter. The Marlins would rally in the second, cutting the HU lead to three, but Hollins took back control late and went to the locker room up 11, 34-23. VWU would cut the Hollins lead to single digits numerous times in the second half, but in the end Hollins would exact a bit of revenge by defeating their ODAC rivals, 59-49.

Highlights:
  • Cabria Mutz hit her only made three-pointer of the season to open the scoring. Ariana Gutierrez hit a trio of three-pointers in the opening frame and Hollins would be up 22-7.
  • A big rally by Virginia Wesleyan made it a 24-21, HU lead with 2:30 left before the break. Moriah Hill hit a jump shot and when Rebekah Funderburk completed a three-point play, Hollins led 34-23 at the half.
  • Hollins maintained the the lead and a Noelani Carter free throw got the lead back to double-digits. However, the Marlins would bank in a three right before the buzzer to make it 41-33, Hollins, heading into the final quarter of the regular season.
  • Carter pushed the lead back to double figures, however, VWU would cut the deficit to single digits five different times in the final 10-minutes. In the closing minute, Selena Wolfe hit a baseline jump shot to make it a 10 point Hollins lead that would hold until the final buzzer.
  • Muts notched her ninth double-double of the season with 19 points, 14 rebounds, four blocks, and six steals. Mutz set the new Hollins basketball single season record with 63 blocks for the year. Her 11.7 rebounds per game finish tops in the ODAC while the sophomore finished 2nd in the league with 2.6 blocks per contest. She just missed the overall rebound mark with 281 boards, finishing two behind Mary Schleusner (W&L) and her 283 rebounds. Mutz (24) played one fewer game (Schleusner, 25) than her rival from Lexington.
  • First year's Carter and Gutierrez made it a trio from the Green and Gold in double figures. Carter had 14 points, five rebounds, seven assists, and four steals while Gutierrez added 12 points, including four three-pointers. 
  • Hollins used 5-11 (45.5%) from long range and 16-23 (69.6%) from the free throw line to offset being out rebounded 34-32.
  • Meadow Dyke paced the Marlins with 15 points while Sarah Ellis added eight points and 13 rebounds.
