Free Throws Prove Difference in Lynchburg

The Lead: Hollins traveled to Lynchburg to face Randolph College on Wednesday night for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) matchup. The Green and Gold would erase a two-point deficit at the break to take a late lead. The WildCats used a 6-0 run that forced a late HU 3-pointer to send the game to overtime. The teams exchanged three-pointers as the game would be tied before a pair of Hollins free throws gave the visitors the lead. However, the home team would close the extra frame by scoring 10 straight points for the 63-55 conference win.

Highlights 
  • Missy Hazard hit a 3-pointer to put Hollins up 5-2 before a Randolph run that put HU in a 13-5 hole. Destiny Hoover connected from long range to make it a five-point spread after the opening 10-minutes.
  • Trailing by seven, Sarah Morales and Cabria Mutz combined for a 5-0 run to cut the deficit to two. After a WildCat hoop, Hoover scored at the halftime horn to make it 26-24 at the break.
  • Randolph led by as many as six, but when Hazard hit another 3-pointer, the game was tied at 34-34. A late Randolph score gave the home team a 40-38 edge heading into the fourth period.
  • With 2:39 to play, Mutz scored to put Hollins in front by three but a 6-0 Randolph surge gave the lead back to the Cats. Hoover hit a game tying three to send the game into overtime.
  • In the extra frame, Hazard hit her third long range jumper but it was immediately matched by Randolph. Zaria Holden gave the Green and Gold her last lead of the night with a pair of free throws, 55-53. Randolph closed the game with a 10-0 run, all from the free throw line to close out the game.
  • Randolph enjoyed a huge edge by converting 19 of their 24 free throw attempts, as opposed to Hollins 6-10 from the line.
  • Mutz led Hollins with 15 points while Morales added 13 before being disqualified with her fifth foul. Hazard scored nine with Hoover netting eight and Holden adding seven. Mutz and Noelani Carter each grabbed six rebounds with Carter handing out five assists.
Up Next: Hollins continues on the road this Saturday with a trip to Virginia Beach to face Va. Wesleyan, 2:00pm.
