Wildcats Pull Away Late

The Lead: The Hollins basketball team made the trip to Lynchburg to face Randolph College on Wednesday afternoon. The WildCats came into the matchup have tasted defeated just on time in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play while Hollins was in search of her first conference win of the new year. HU trailed by just three at the break and found themselves down 36-30 with two-minutes left in the third quarter. However, Randolph closed the third on a run and pulled away late to claim the 62-38, conference, win.    

Highlights:
  • Both teams got off to a slow start and after a Cabria Mutz free throw, Randolph would lead 7-3 with less than 3:00 left in the opening quarter. The lead grew to 11-3 but a Noelani Carter jump shot would see the WildCats lead by six (11-5) after one period of play.
  • Three-pointers by Moriah Hill and Arian Gutierrez would keep Hollins within six, 17-11, with 6:00 left before the half. With 2:22 left to play in the first half, Hollins took a timeout after back-to-back Randolph baskets gave the home team a 22-13 advantage. Hollins closed on a surge, after another Hill 3-ball, Gutierrez completed a three-point play in the closing seconds made it a 24-21 game at the break.
  • Randolph added to the lead and pushed the advantage to double digits. A Mutz bucket cut the deficit to nine. Hill once again delivered from long range and HU trailed by six, 36-30 with just over two minutes left in the third. However, the WildCats closed the frame on a 7-0 run to make it 43-30 with 10-minutes left to play.
  • The home team carried that momentum into the fourth quarter and used a 19-8 closing period to pull away and claim the ODAC win, 62-38.
  • Hill went 3-4 from behind the arc to finish with a team high 13 while Mutz scored 12 to go with 12 rebounds and two blocked shots. Gutierrez added six points and four rebounds with Carter scoring five points while battling foul trouble throughout the contest.
  • Jessica Jennings led all scorers with 18 points for the Cats.
Up Next: The schedule gets no easier for the Green and Gold as Hollins plays host to, ODAC preseason top choice, Randolph-Macon on Saturday afternoon. The game with the Yellow Jackets is set to tip at 2:00pm.
