The Lead: Tuesday marked the home opener for the Hollins volleyball team as they took on Mary Baldwin in a rematch of an earlier Hollins victory. Mary Baldwin won the first and third sets to take a 2-1 lead. After a win to force a fifth and decisive set, the Green and Gold roared out to a 12-7 advantage before three consecutive points by the visitors made it 12-10. After a timeout, Hollins used a pair of kills and a service ace to finish off the Squirrels and take their home opener, 3-2.

Highlights 

  • HU defeated Mary Baldwin by a score of 19-25, 25-18, 20-25, 25-21, 15-10., . 
  • The first set was virtually even, however 11 hitting errors by Hollins would give MBU the set. Hollins would cut down on the miscues and use a 44-42 kill advantage and 20 Fighting Squirrel receiving errors to complete the comeback and beat Mary Baldwin for the second time in the past four days.
  • Sophia Maurer led all attackers with 17 kills. Carrie Nelson added eight, including a big kill coming out of the timeout to seize the momentum in the final set, while Kenna Esquibel added six. 
  • Faith Schaefer served up five aces, including the match clincher, with Jaelyn Werley serving four and Esquibel adding three. Zoe Brooks assisted on 23 on HU's 44 kills and Esquibel, Maurer, and Zoe Miranda all recorded double digit digs.
