Hollins Falls to Guilford in ODAC Basketball Tournament

The Lead: Hollins University saw one of its most successful seasons in recent history come to an end Tuesday evening in a 75-68 loss to Guilford in the First-Round of the 2022 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Tournament.  

Hollins, which was hosting its first ODAC Tournament game in school history, finishes the season with 11 wins, which is tied for the second most victories in a season since HU joined the NCAA and the ODAC.
 
Highlights:
  • Kayla Surles led Hollins with 22 points. Xavia Hahn a career-high 19 points, while Tia Tucker had 10 points and Cabria Mutz grabbed 10 rebounds.
  • Hollins took an 11-0 lead following a Rebekah Funderburk basket midway through the first quarter.
  • Guilford cut the lead to 11-5 before Hollins capped the quarter with a 9-0 run in the final three minutes to lead 20-5.
  • A Moriah Hill jumper put  HU out in front 24-5 early in the second quarter but Guilford would finish the half on a 20-7 run, cutting the Hollins lead to 31-25 at halftime.
  • In the third quarter, Hollins tied the game at 46-46 but GC scored nine of the final 12 points of the quarter to lead 55-49 heading into the fourth.
  • The Quakers scored the first five points of the final quarter to extend its lead to 11 points at 60-49.
  • Hollins battled back, cutting the Guilford lead to 67-64 with 1:30 to play on a Tucker basket.
  • That would be as close as Hollins would get a GC knocked down 10-of-12 free-throws down the stretch to seal the win.
  • Guilford got 25 points and 11 rebounds from Lindsay Gauldin. The Quakers bench outscored the Hollins reserves 28-6, including 14 from Carleigh Perry.
