The Lead: Behind a season-high 25 points from
Kayla Surles, the Hollins University Basketball team earned its first ODAC and NCAA win over Bridgewater since the schools joined the league in 1982, topping the Eagles 73-66 Wednesday night.
Highlights:
- Tia Tucker joined Surles in double-figures and registered a double-double with 18 points and team-high 10 rebounds to go along with five assists and three steals. Xavia Hahn scored a career-high 15 points for HU and Cabria Mutz had six points to go along with eight boards.
- Hollins knocked down 9-of-15 shots in the first quarter to lead 23-12 after the first 10 minutes of play. BC led 6-5 before HU went on a 15-2 run, taking a 20-8 lead on a Surles three-pointer.
- HU scored six of the first eight points of the second quarter, pushing its advantage to 28-12 following a basket by Moriah Hill 30 seconds in.
- The Eagles closed the deficit to 34-25, but HU went on a 10-0 run in the final three minutes of the half to take a 44-25 lead at the half.
- The Hollins lead grew to 23 points when a Mutz bucket with just over six minutes to play in the third quarter made it a 52-29 lead for Hollins.
- BC used an 18-4 run, trimming the HU advantage to 64-58 with just under five minutes to go in the game.
- Hollins responded with next five points, with a Surles trifecta making it 69-58 with 3:19 on the clock.
- BC then scored seven unanswered points of its own to pull within four at 69-65 with 39 seconds to play.
- Mutz was fouled on HU's ensuing possession, made the first shot, missed the second but Mackinzie Henninger was there for the offensive rebound. She was then fouled, made the front end of her free-throws to push the Hollins lead to 71-65 with 30 seconds left.
- Hollins would get a defensive stop on the other end make three free-throws in the final 15 seconds to seal the win.
