How It Happened
The teams traded point to start the game until Kayla Surles sandwiched a VWU bucket with a pair of threes, giving Hollins (10-9, 5--8 ODAC) an 11-6 lead. Virginia Wesleyan (5-15, 3-10 ODAC) cut the lead to three until Lenah Clements hit her first three of the game to extend the lead back to six. Va. Wesleyan hit a pair of shots but Clements hit a jumper to give HU a 16-12 lead after one.
VWU trimmed the lead back to two before Sydney Strange drilled a three and put Hollins back up by five. Back-to-back Marlin baskets tied the game at 21 and VWU took their first lead of the game, 23-21, at the 5:35 mark of the second. VWU clung to 28-26 lead until the Green and Gold ended the half on a 7-2 run, taking a 33-30 lead into the break.
The Marlins scored the first points of the second half, but then Clements hit a three, putting HU back up by five. Neither team scored for the next three minutes until Yasmine Tyler ended the drought with a jumpshot, extending the Green and Gold lead. Va. Wesleyan then went on a 13-7 run, cutting the Hollins lead to just one, 45-44, heading to the final frame.
Both teams stayed scoreless to start the fourth until, with HU clinging to a one-point lead, they went on an 11-0 run to put the game out of reach. Va.
