Basketball Wins Crazy Overtime Matchup

Box Score

ROANOKE, Va. - A win is a win.

It doesn't have to be pretty, you just have to score more points than the other team.

Wednesday was one of those games for Hollins as the Green and Gold trailed Randolph by as many as nine in the third quarter but hit some clutch shots, along with  five of six free throws in the final 10 seconds. to pick up a gritty 61-58 OT win over Randolph.

How It Happened

Both offenses had a hard time finding a rhythm to start the game as each team was only able to muster 12 points in the opening quarter. Randolph (5-11, 1-9 ODAC) took an early 14-12 lead in the second quarter before a three from Kayla Surles and a layup from Yasmine Tyler sandwiched a Randolph bucket and gave Hollins (9-7, 4-6 ODAC) a 17-16 lead. The teams traded baskets back and forth until, with the score tied at 24, the WildCats ended the half on a 6-0 run, to take a 30-24 lead into the break.

Randolph extended their lead to eight to start the third, before Serena Lytton caught fire, coming up with a big layup and-one, followed by back-to-back threes to tie things at 33. The teams went back-and-forth for the rest of the quarter until Lytton nailed another three to give HU a one-point lead heading to the fourth.

Hollins started the fourth quarter on an 8-2 run, extending their lead to seven, highlighted by another Lytton basket and-one. Randolph battled back and, with nine seconds left, hit a basket to send the game to overtime.

Neither team could pull ahead in the overtime period until Kayla Surles hit two free throws to tie the game, then took an offensive foul, hitting one of two, to give HU a one-point lead. Randolph got off a three at the buzzer but it didn't drop and HU added the final two points on a Randolph technical as the Green and Gold picked up their second straight home overtime win.

Lytton led the way with 22 points while Kayla Surles had 21. Tyler had a double-double, coming away with 12 points and 12 boards while Keyazia Taylor's night involved three blocks, making her the all-time blocks leader at Hollins.

Stats of the Game

-There were 28 lead changes and 30 ties in the game.

-The Hollins defense forced 26 Randolph turnovers and turned those into 21 points.
