First Quarter Costly in Hollins Loss to Bridgewater

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Trailing by as many as 15 in the fourth, quarter, Hollins' hard fought comeback fell just short as Bridgewater hit four free throws down the stretch en route to a 68-60 win over the Green and Gold on Saturday. 

How It Happened

Sydney Strange started off with the game's first basket, putting Hollins (8-7, 3-6 ODAC) ahead. That was about all that went right for the Green and Gold in the first quarter though, as Bridgewater (8-8, 7-2 ODAC) outscored HU 18-6 for the rest of the period. 

After the Eagles started the second on a 7-0 run to extend their lead to 25-8, Lenah Clements scored five straight and Kayla Surles added a three to cut into the lead. With the teams trading points and Bridgewater ahead 29-17, Hollins went on their own run to end the half, outscoring Bridgewater 13-4 over the final 4:48, to trail by just three, 33-30, at the break. 

Kayla Surles drilled a three out of the gate in the third, tying things at 33. But Bridgewater went on a 13-2 run, holding Hollins scoreless for stretches of almost three minutes and four minutes, respectively. Clements made back-to-back threes to end the scoring drought and cut the lead down to 47-41. Each team added a bucket and BU led 49-43 at the end of three. 

A pair of free throws from Yasmine Tyler brought HU to within four before Bridgewater scored the next eight points. The Eagles were able to pull further ahead, leading 62-47, but Hollins just wouldn't go away. Seven free throws, along with a pair of baskets from Kayla Surles and Clements, made the score 64-60. Bridgewater put the game out of reach, hitting four of six free throw in the final 19 seconds. 

Hollins was led by Kayla Surles' game-high 23 points. Clements added 14 while Keyazia Taylor grabbed 13 rebounds and had seven blocks. 

Stat of the Game

-Bridgewater outrebounded Hollins 59-42, including 22-6 on the offensive glass. 

What's Next

Hollins will look to pick up an ODAC W when they welcome Randolph to Roanoke on Wednesday. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 pm.
