Second Half Dooms Hollins in Loss to Eastern Mennonite

Box Score

HARRISONBURG, Va. - Sometimes, stats don't tell the whole story.

For instance, on Saturday against Eastern Mennonite, Kayla Surles had a game-high 21 points while Keyazia Taylor picked up a double-double with 13 points and 17 rebounds. But, unfortunately, that wasn't enough to push Hollins to a win as a big second half from EMU gave the Royals a 77-64 win.

How It Happened

It was a tale of two halves for the Green and Gold. Hollins (7-6, 2-5 ODAC) started off cold, spotting EMU a 5-0 lead before finally getting on the board at the 6:50 mark. With the score tied at five, Eastern Mennonite (2-10, 1-5 ODAC) went on a 9-0 run, forcing a Hollins timeout. Out of the timeout, HU went on their own run, outscoring the Royals 13-3, with points from Lenah Clements, Brianna Lohrmann, Serena Lytton and Kayla Surles, to take a one-point lead after one.

In the second, the two teams traded points for a bulk of the quarter, with Hollins trailing by as many as four. Down 31-27, with just over two minutes left in the half, a three from Lytton and a jumper from Kayla Surles sandwiched an EMU bucket and sent the teams to the locker room with Hollins down 33-32.

Both teams came out hot in the third quarter and HU was able to keep the game close, until the final 1:39 of the third. Leading 51-50, EMU finished the quarter on a 7-0 run and took a 58-50 lead to the fourth.

In the final frame, everytime it seemed like Hollins tried to grab some momentum, EMU would snatch it right back. Kayla Surles made a bucket at the 6:00 mark, then Hollins was kept scoreless for the next 3:53, with Taylor breaking the drought. Hollins outscored EMU 10-5 over the final 2:07, with Clements providing some excitement with a pair of back-to-back and-ones, but the Green and Gold had dug too much of a hole.

To go along with Kayla Surles' and Taylor's strong day, Clements finished with 16 and Lytton had 12.

Stat of the Game

-Eastern Mennonite outrebounded Hollins 56-45, with a 19-12 advantage on the offensive glass.
