Box Score ROANOKE, Va. - When you score more in a quarter than the opposing team scores in a half, chances are it's going to be a pretty good game.
That's exactly what happened Tuesday night as Hollins (5-3, 2-2 ODAC) held visiting Salem (0-8, 0-2 USA South) to just 12 first-half points while scoring 15 and 17 themselves, respectively, en route to a 63-40 win.
How It Happened
Lenah Clements got things started quick, knocking down a three in HU's first possession. After another Hollins bucket, Salem hit a three to bring it within two. HU would then end the quarter on a 10-3 run, highlighted by a three from Serena Lytton, three points from Clements and four from Kayla Surles to take a 15-6 lead.
A basket and-one for Salem started the second and brought the Green and Gold lead to six. But a Yasmine Tyler layup, another Clements jumper, a three from Keenan Surles and another Lytton bucket extended the lead to double-digits at 24-9. Salem would only score three more points in the quarter as Hollins took a commanding 32-12 lead into the locker room.
HU's defense continued to lock down in the third quarter, holding Salem to just 12 points and keeping the 20+ point lead in tact.
Salem outscored Hollins 16-14 in the final frame but by then, the game was out of reach as HU was able to get a lot of bench players minutes. In total, 13 different players saw floor action for Hollins.
Clements led the way for the HIU offense, finishing with 13 points on a strong 50% from the field. Kayla Surles had 11 points to go along with nine rebounds and seven assists. Keenen Surles added 10 off the bench. Tyler was a force on the glass, coming down with a game-high 14 rebounds.
