Hollins Steak Ends On The Road

Box Score

Sweet Briar, VA - The Hollins tennis team took a two match win streak on the road when they traveled to face Sweet Briar in a crucial Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) match. The Vixens took a 2-1 lead after doubles play and made Hollins play from behind for the remainder of the afternoon.

In individual play, Hollins would need to take four of the six matchups to complete the comeback. Four of the matches were tied up heading into the third sets. After teaming with Kateri Johnson to win at #3 doubles, sophomore Olivia Dannon made short work of her opponent, 6-1, to take the point. At the #2 spot, Amelia Verkerk won the second set 7-5 before her comeback was derailed, 2-6, in the third. Valerie Sargeant was locked in the closest match of the day at #6 singles. Sargeant fell, 6-2, before turning the tables for a, 6-3, second set victory. Trailing 4-5 in the finale, Sargeant come up just short of the comeback and fell, 6-4. Johnson won the first set at #3 but couldn't close out the match and a third set comeback by her Vixen foe finished the afternoon of closely contested tennis.

Hollins is scheduled to host Randolph-Macon on Sunday afternoon but the forecast looks to be putting the match in peril. Please check www.HollinsSports.com for updates.
